The Speech

Presentation Growth

In Language Arts, I have grown in presenting work to the class. This is usually difficult for me because I tend to do an awkward voice whenever I have to speak in front of the class or a crowd of people. I sometimes do this voice and I don’t even know that I am doing it. This has been a problem for me and my teachers. I have been getting better at speaking in front of people.

My first artifact to prove this is my book talk speech. This is the book talk endeavor. During this project, we had to read a book, my book was called Flight #116 is Down, by Caroline B. Cooney. We also had to write a speech about it. I found this very easy because I took notes as I read the book and I also am very good at writing about things. My speech is 5 index cards long and is pretty detailed. It includes the characters and their purposes in the story. It also includes the setting and the plot structure of this book. A concept that I used to present this is called public speaking. This means that you speak with confidence and experience during when I was presenting, I swayed back and forth because I was very nervous to present. This shows growth because I was able to present better than I had ever before. I used to present with a funny voice because I did not want to use my actual voice. This is because my voice is high pitched and kind of annoying.

My second artifact to prove my growth in my visual aid. This is from the book talk project. We also during the project had to make a picture that would have something to do with the story. My picture was of what the plane would look like when it crashed. I can’t really draw very well so, I did a collage that looked like the plane almost. A collage is when you cut out pieces of paper into shapes or they can also be random, then after you have those pieces of paper, you glue or tape them to a bigger piece of paper to form a picture or a random piece of art. I really like the collage concept because it is interesting and fun, but it is also time consuming and difficult because, you have to cut out a ton of pieces of paper. It was also very hard to present because it was all over the place. I did not know what to say about my image. What I decided to do was to explain the process and explain why I did what I did. This shows growth because I found a path around a problem that I had when I was presenting. Professionals have to find ways around problems when they are presenting because they want to look professional.

My third artifact to prove this is my book talk rubric grade. This paper was graded by Ms.Miller, this is also from the book talk. This paper had all kinds of criteria and ranks that had to do with how prepared you were and how you did presenting. I received something around an 85%. I only lost points because I did my weird voice that I do when I get nervous. I had my speech written out and my visual aid was there and I felt confident, but still nervous. A concept that I used in this was to read off of note cards. I did this because it would be more portable than on a piece of paper and would look professional. This shows growth because I thought that I would get a worse grade then I did. This is because I did not feel that my speech was very long or thoughtful. But it was and that made me happy that I only lost points on my weird voice.

This help the future me because, I plan on starting an inventing company called VERSPECTOR©. I will need to speak in front of millions of people to ask them if they would join me and my company. I would have to not stutter and make no mistakes. This would help me sound way more professional and prepared to be a leader.

I need to work on this skill further by not doing that weird voice. That weird voice is a huge problem for me because it makes me get lower grades on papers. This is a problem for my teachers because it gets really annoying.
