First Task Sheet

Trying harder

In Wellness & fitness, I have grown in putting more effort into the activities. At the beginning of the year, I thought that I was very fit, but I wasn’t because I couldn’t even run without feeling a lot of pain. I tried a lot of different solutions to fix this, but none of them worked. Then I found that if I jog slowly at first, then at the last moment, I run like the wind. This helped me feel more confident about myself. This strategy makes it easier to run continuously. This is called pacing yourself.

My first artifact that will prove this is my fitness data chart for the 3rd quarter. This is from the fitness part of Wellness/fitness. The data chart has details about the activity and includes our heart rate. We do this because it can prove that we actually tried on the activity. The blue sheet also includes something called the RPE. RPE stands for Rate of Perceived Exertion. At first, this does not really make sense, but it actually has a simple meaning. This is the number that says how hard we actually worked. For example, if you were to work not very hard and could still breathe with no effort, you would receive a 3 as your RPE. They rate from 2-9, 2 being the weakest and 9 being the hardest. Sometimes I would get an RPE of 2 or 3 because I wasn’t even trying. Then I realized that a new quarter means a new start, so I decided to put more effort into my work and participate in fitness activities even if I don’t really like them. I also try to be positive and make the best of each activity. One day, we played a game called Mazeball and I have to say, this is my favorite game so far. This is a game where you have to run back and forth across the gym without getting hit by a dodgeball. The day we played it, I got a heart rate of 204. That is a really high number for a heart rate. This shows growth because it shows that I got a really high heart rate, and my normal heart rate is something around 120.

My second artifact is the jump-rope task sheet. This is also from Fitness. This sheet has all kinds of jump-rope challenges that we have to do. The challenges vary by student jump-rope skill. I was ranked in the section that said that I have trouble jumping rope, because I ranked myself there. This can prove that I have improved in jumping and timing my jumps correctly. I did not finish the worksheet though, and that is because some of the tasks were too hard for me. They included jumping backwards and doing crisscross with the rope. The hardest one for me at first was the figure 8 challenge. I had to swing the rope in a figure 8 and then jump. This included flicking your wrists around and doing a figure 8 with the rope. After 3 times of the figure 8, you have to straighten the rope and jump through it.  This was difficult because I could not time it right. Then I started to get in a groove and with the timing of the grove, I could then complete the task. This shows growth because it proves that I found the right timing and I also used persistence. I used this because I really wanted to learn the task because I looked like a pretty cool dance move. This also shows growth because, I checked more boxes than I think that I could. It was very difficult, but I still kept trying.

My third artifact is my very first Fitness data chart. This is from Fitness. This has the same contents of the 3rd-quarter data chart, except this one had a pedometer # slot. Mine was number 18. We would use pedometers to count our steps during walk-jog. To find our heart rate, we will in the middle of the activity count our pulse for about 10 seconds. Then when we got back to our room, we would multiply that number by 6. We also do this at the end of the activity, then we record it in our data charts in the heart rate section.  This artifact sort of shows the opposite of growth. On this chart, I got really low heart rates and RPE’s. This is because, I did not really try and would give up easily. I also had to slow down dramatically during the jogging because I would get so tired. On my 3rd _quarter chart, I am getting high heart rate and decent RPE’s. I am also taking the time to write out all of the data and calculate my heart rate instead of just estimating. This actually shows growth because my hand writing increased and my effort increased dramatically.

This will help the future me because my Granddad wants me to be a runner. I act like I can do it but I really can’t. Now that I have found that jogging slowly then at the last moment, run as fast as you can.

I need to further develop this skill by training to jog farther and faster. This will help my cardiovascular endurance and increase my natural speed.
